California Telephone Access Program — brochure language adaptation
This state program provides free specialized phones for those who require assistance to communicate over the phone, such as folks who have lost their hearing and need an amplified phone, or have trouble seeing and need dialing assistance. With a doctor's sign off, an appropriate phone will be provided by the program. Part of promoting this program involves traditional brochures which explain the program and include a form to fill out to get the process started. These brochures are available in several languages.
Once the project had a working English layout, I coordinated the brochure translation, which involved both a traditional translation service as well as a separate cultural advisor. I helped reconcile differences between these two, then flowed in all of the translated copy into each layout. I also adjusted all layouts over time, as client requested copy and elements were changed in later printings. (ie, policy changes, new service centers added, etc.) I also drew the maps.
An English version (rendering) depicting the finished piece is at top. Then the Spanish, Chinese, Vietnamese, and Hmong brochure covers at next, and then the full English printer's layout at the bottom. Work performed through OneWorld Communication for California Telephone Access Program (via CPUC). Layout primarily developed in InDesign, with the maps drawn in Illustrator.
